Nojiri Kogen is one of the quietest highland communities in Nagano — a wooded plateau above Lake Nojiri, settled decades ago as a university and summer-house village, where the plots are generous and the houses sit apart from each other under the trees. What drew us here is the ratio: for the price of a small car you get a full timber house, a garden, a vegetable plot and land in a part of Japan with real four-season life — Kurohime and Madarao skiing in winter, the lake and the trails in summer. Kurohime Kogen is about 10 minutes by car, Madarao and Tangram around 20–30, and the Myoko Kogen areas within an hour — a genuine winter base without resort pricing.
Summer
Lake Nojiri for sailing, kayaking and swimming, hiking on Mt Kurohime and Mt Madarao, and highland air that keeps the village cool through August.
Everyday
Shinanomachi covers supermarkets, clinic and post office; soba, onsen and farm stands are part of ordinary weeks here.
