Sorano is often called the Matera of Tuscany, and standing in its lanes it is easy to see why: an Etruscan settlement carved into red tufa, houses growing straight out of the cliff, stairs and alleys that have not changed shape in centuries. Most of the Maremma's famous villages have long since priced out ordinary buyers. Sorano has not.
