A House by Zenkoji, Nagano
Zenkoji Monzen-machi, Nagano City, Japan
Why We Selected It

Nagano's temple quarter is one of the few places in Japan where a buyer can own a traditional house on historic streets at a price that leaves room for the restoration it deserves. This one keeps the register people come to Japan for — timber construction, tatami and shoji — with a ground floor that has been kept rather than modernised. The upper floor is honest about its age; brought up to the standard of the rooms below, the house becomes a rare thing: a genuine kominka address in a city of 1,400 years of pilgrimage, under two hours from Tokyo.
The Home

Traditional two-storey machiya-style home on the temple streets of Zenkoji's historic Monzen-machi · Ground floor well maintained and retaining its original character; the upper floor is dated and would benefit from renovation
A traditional two-storey home of about 80 m² on the temple streets below Zenkoji — tatami rooms, shoji screens and timber framing throughout, with the Daimon and Nakamise streets at the door and the ski resorts of the Japanese Alps within reach.
- A two-storey timber home of about 80 m² (860 sq ft) with two bedrooms and one bathroom.
- The ground floor retains its original character — tatami rooms, shoji screens and dark timber framing — and has been well maintained.
- A lower tatami room opens towards the rear of the house, with a wood-trimmed bathroom finished in small white tiles.
- The upper floor is more dated and would benefit from renovation — an opportunity to add modern comfort while preserving the structure and detail that make the house unmistakably Japanese.
- Sold as a home to restore rather than reinvent.
Life Here
The temple streets
The Daimon and Nakamise approaches to Zenkoji — some 1,400 years of pilgrimage — still lined with traditional shops, cafés and restaurants; the Monzen-machi district grew up around the temple and keeps its atmosphere.
The mountains
Iizuna Resort is around 30 minutes by car from central Nagano; Togakushi Ski Resort about 45–50 minutes, beneath the ancient shrines and cedar avenue of the Togakushi highlands.
The ski regions
Nagano is an unusually practical base for the Alps: Hakuba Valley, Shiga Kogen and Nozawa Onsen are all reachable from the city by car or train.
Connections
Tokyo is around 90 minutes by the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Nagano Station; Zenkoji itself is an easy walk or short bus ride from the station.
Our Perspective
Why it works
Traditional character, a genuine temple-town address and an entry price near €87,000 — the ground floor is already good, and the upper floor is the project.
Ownership case
Homes of this type on the streets immediately around Zenkoji rarely reach the market; restored, they work as a private base, a small ryokan-style let, or a seasonal home within 90 minutes of Tokyo.
What makes it special
Waking up on a temple street that has been walked by pilgrims for 1,400 years — and being on the lifts of the Japanese Alps within the hour.
Best suited for
A buyer who wants a restoration project with real substance at a low entry price, or an investor positioning for Nagano's growing year-round tourism.
