Hot Spring House, Izu Kōgen
Izu Kōgen, Ito, Shizuoka, Japan
Why We Selected It

The bath is the reason. It is generous for a house of this size, fed by Izu's hot spring water, and it was built low on purpose — the window sits at eye level when you are in the water, and the garden becomes the view. The location does the rest. Izu Kōgen is the peninsula's best-known resort quarter: a wooded plateau on the slopes of the extinct volcano Mount Ōmuro, with the Jōgasaki cliffs and the Pacific below, Itō's onsen town and orange beach 10 minutes north, and the sand of Shimoda's Shirahama about 50 minutes south. The Izukyū Line puts Atami's Shinkansen within 40 minutes, which makes the front door roughly two hours from Tokyo Station.

Life Here
The bath
Your own onsen: hot spring water in a room built around the garden — low window, green outside, steam inside. Izu is one of Japan's great hot spring regions, and this house taps it directly.
The coast
Itō Orange Beach and the harbour town are 10 minutes north; the surf and white sand of Shimoda's Shirahama about 50 minutes south. Below the house, the Jōgasaki cliffs run south along the Pacific.
The plateau
Izu Kōgen sits on the wooded skirts of Mount Ōmuro, an extinct volcano with a lift to its crater rim. Mild winters, green all year, cooler than the coast in summer.
Getting here
Izu Kōgen Station is about 2.6 km away. From there the Izukyū Line reaches Atami in 40 minutes, with Shinkansen connections to Tokyo — under two hours door to door.
The work
Usable as it stands. Interiors are dated rather than damaged — kitchen and finishes are the natural first projects.
Our Perspective
Why it works
A private onsen bath, a sea view and a large garden in Izu Kōgen — the peninsula's most established resort quarter — at €78,000.
Ownership case
Under two hours from Tokyo by train, with beaches, hot springs and a mild winter climate, Izu Kōgen has supported a second-home and short-stay market for decades. An onsen bath is the single feature guests here search for, and this house has one.
What makes it special
The bathroom: unusually large, fed by genuine hot spring water, and designed low so the garden reads as part of the room. Houses with this in Izu Kōgen normally sell for multiples of this price.
Best suited for
Buyers wanting a weekend house within easy reach of Tokyo — sea, onsen and mountain in one peninsula — that can also earn as a holiday rental.
